Sci Fi Air Show

24 Jul 2011

Bill George is a Visual Effects Supervisor at Industrial Light and Magic who worked on 6 Star Trek and 2 Star Wars films and has this wonderful site with Photoshop Photos called The Sci Fi Air Show.  Basically its a site with great and realistically detailed photoshop photos of Sci Fi and Fantasy vehicles or as the sites mission statements says

The SCI-FI AIR SHOW’s purpose is to preserve and promote the rich and varied history of Sci-Fi/fantasy vehicles. Through display and education we seek to celebrate the classic design and beauty of these ships and the rich imaginations that created them. When the cameras stopped rolling, many of these proud old ships were lost and forgotten. Please join us in working to keep these rare and beautiful birds soaring!

The ships are so real when I first saw them I thought . WOW someone made mock up ships and displayed them. Then I realized that it was created photos. I came across this site a couple of months ago but for some reason forgot it existed until I went searching for photos of the spacecraft from Space 1999 and images Eagle 4 came up from this site.  I was amazed once again with the detail of the photos that this time I made it a point to blog about it. I know some have probably seen these photos before but for those that are not aware of the site here is some gorgeous images to relish.

Oh yea if you go to the Sci FI Air Show you can also download some of these for your wallpaper on your computer.

New Star Trek poster of Trouble with Tribbles

21 Jul 2010

Source Wired

I came across on my Google news alerts a pair of cool posters from Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin, Texas of the showing of the original Star Trek series Trouble with Tribbles.  One with Spock the other with Uhuru and the rest of the crews heads just barely visible and almost covered by those furry creatures at the bottom of each. This is a follow up to the the theaters successful showing of the episode Space Seed which also had its own poster. Cool theater and great art. The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema also plays host to the Fantastic Fest.

Avatar and District 9 nominated but no Star Trek

02 Feb 2010

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released its nominations for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards that will be held on Sunday, March 7, 2010 . As expected Avatar was chosen in the best film category. What I did not expect and even stated it in previous post was District 9. I was sure that Star Trek would of been in there and District 9 would of been nominated as an independent. Then again the Academy has its own way of choosing and there are times and this is one of them that we sit there and scratch our heads and say - What were you thinking ?  Not that D9 did not deserve it but I thought and so did many others that Star Trek was the better of the 2 films. Well what do I know. Right.

Out of that list I can not see any other film other then Avatar winning this award, Avatar which  has broken all sorts of records and has crossed a cultural divide to become a success not only domestically but world wide. Not too many films can brag about that. Even if the judges of the awards look at sci fi films as a box office filler that are not worthy of any consideration for the top honors. Avatars innovative approach with 3D coupled with its success should be the obvious choice. That is unless the Oscars want to make a statement of some kind then one of the more artsy ones will get it.

Of therewere others like Mel Gibsons introfor the best director. And James speech that followed.
