ACE Eddies nominates Avatar, Star Trek, and District 9

12 Jan 2010

Once again Avatar, Star Trek, and District 9 Dominate an award nomination for best in film. This time it's the 59th ACE Eddies Awards (American Cinema Editors) for best edited feature film. If you are wondering what exactly ACE  is all about just like I was. It is just this;

(Info taken from ACE website)

ACE, the AMERICAN CINEMA EDITORS, is an honorary society of motion picture editors founded in 1950.  Film editors are voted into membership on the basis of their professional achievements, their dedication to the education of others and their commitment to the craft of editing.

These awards will be presented on February 14, 2010 at the Beverly Hilton CA. This is the third credible award organization that has awarded these three films top honors for best of film category. You think that there is a theme going here. Especially heading towards the big daddy of them all the Oscars.

If I was a betting man I would say that Avatar will most likely win best movie of the year in almost all the award shows. It's the second biggest film ever and in another week it will probably be the best box office money maker of all time a head of Titanic. Star Trek will claim its honors in other categories and District 9 will more then likely dominate most likely all the independent film awards. Up will take the Best in animation. Just threw that one in for the heck of it. Here is the list of films that were nominated along with the previously mentioned sci fi films.

The PGA nominates 3 Sci Fi movies for top honors

09 Jan 2010

The PGA, no not the Pro Golf Association but the Producers Guild of America has nominated 3 sci fi movies (Avatar, Star Trek, and District 9) for the top honors. The PGA Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year film award has become a litmus test to what the Academy Awards may do for the best picture award. To put the numbers in perspective in the last 20 years 13 films nominated by the PGA had won the best Academy Award picture of the year including last years winner Slumdog Millionaire . What is unusual about this is that the PGA usually looks the other way with sci fi films so seeing these three on the list really caught the industries eye. Well sci fi films in the past with some exceptions were always considered a low brow type of film not worthy of any recognition. This thankfully has been changing in the last couple of years as films like Star Trek and others become more and more main stream.

Where to get free sci fi and fantasy ebooks

06 Jan 2010

There is nothing like a good book to read and it is even better when you can get it for free.  I have come across some pretty good sites in the years that do just that let you either read books online or download them for free. Some have classic novels with well known authors others have new stories by unknown writers. Most have a rating system in place to let you know what others thought of the book.  But all the sites that I have listed have a good reputation and are worth checking out. Like always if anyone has any other site that they prefer that is not listed please feel free to write me or post it  in the comments. I have no problem adding to the list and letting others know where they can find great books.

Comic book movies in the last decade

01 Jan 2010

imageThe decade between 2000 and 2010 showed a real spark in comic book movies done right. Hollywood finally started to get away from the cartoonish looking comic movies and started down the dark path of the comics with heroes who had real life issues. Batman was no longer  cartoonish joke like the series in the 60's made him. Though the original Batman revision movie done in 1989 tried to go in the right direction by taken the character seriously. The follow ups (sequels) ended up going the wrong way and almost killed the franchise. Even Superman was ending that look with Superman Returns.

Movies like X-Men, Spider Man, Hulk, Iron Man, and the Fantastic Four brought Marvels heroes in the limelight. They also did a good job bringing the comic to life the way they were suppose to. Yea there was some creative licence and liberties on the films but hey this Hollywood. What did you expect?
