The prequel to the 1982 movie Thing that was directed by John Carpenters and starring Kurt Russel is set to start shooting in March. But that is far as it goes with news on it. There have been few leaks like Ronald Moore of Battlestar Galactica fame had a hand in the story which needed a rewrite from the guy who also rewritten the new Nightmare on Elmstreet movie Eric Heisserer who was quoted to say;
I jumped at this job because I hold the Carpenter adaptation to very high standards, and I knew it would be a challenge to create a comparable companion piece. Sort of a “Nobody better screw this up, especially me” mentality. Lucky for me, the people at Strike and the director have the same standards.
This is a “from scratch” rewrite assignment for the most part, as was my work on A Nightmare on Elm Street. I can’t say any more on that. I have the highest respect for both Ron Moore and Wesley Strick.
The casting is also very vague with the film. Only one name has appeared so far that I can find and it is Kate Loyd who will play one of the researchers.
Some cool facts on the original Thing
- The Thing was a remake of the 1951 film The Thing From Another World .
- The 1982 remake was adopted from the book Who Goes There written by John W Cambell that inspired the 1951 classic rather then on the original movie.
- The Thing was part of John Carpenters Apocalypse Trilogy which consisted of the Thing , Prince of Darkness, and Mouth of Madness. Even though there were no real ties between them. Carpenter always referred to those films as the Apocalypse Trilogy.
